The short passage show how do the grade system work and the system is utilize widespread in Europe and united state. Generally the grade system separate the ages of children in about twelve different, and roughly in three groups which is known as the elementary, junior high, and high school that we so called. From the lecture, the speaker demonstrate some idea to against the system. since the system doesn’t consider the differences of individuals , and particularly the physical mature differences between female and male, and most of all, the standard test which is only a reference of group, it indicate few personal learning ability. 



The graded school system, which groups students by age, is usually divided into primary, intermediate, and secondary grades. However, according to the lecture, there are several disadvantages to this type of system. In the first places, maturity is not considered. All students begin the first grade at six years old; however, many children are not mature enough to go to school at that age. In contrast, some younger children are ready for school before their sixth birthdays but are denied the opportunity to begin until they reach the intermediate grades. Nevertheless, they are still schedules for classes according to age, not maturity. Even more concerning is the problem of grade-level standard, which rely on testing to evaluate progress by age instead of by actual mastery on the part of individuals. The grade-level system is inefficient because it requires some learners to repeat concepts that they have already learned in order to master those that they still need to know. It also penalizes students who are capable of learning more material than grade-level curriculum allows. Furthermore, research shows a correlation between low self-esteem and drop-out rates with requirement that students repeat a calendar year because they have not learned part of the material for their grade.

    二十世紀是戰爭的世紀。1914年爆發的歐戰是人類史上首次機械化的大規模戰爭。英國文學界菁英在此役傷亡慘重,大英帝國不對陣亡九十萬人因此稱為"大戰"(the great war),並且有"一戰文學"之誕生。在戰壕的另一方,德語小說家雷馬克也有《西線無戰事》之作。一九三九年至四五年間,全球捲入更大規模的總體戰爭,終以人類歷史上首次原爆結束。戰後的歐洲因而有猶太裔的"滅族"(holocaust)文學、德國的"廢墟"文學,義大利的"新寫實主義"文學等;後來更間接催生五O年代英國的"憤怒青年"、美國的"垮掉的一代"。一九六O年代美國泥足深陷的越南戰爭則令一代人投入嬉皮文化運動,向詩僧寒山汲取靈感。在九O年代,隨著蘇聯解體、東西冷戰結束,"社會主義現實主義"文學成為歷史陳跡。但在美國獨霸,所謂"意識形態鬥爭已然結束"的時候,年輕一輩的作家在全球零時差的狀況下,意以不同角度切入"後冷戰"的現實。
二十世紀是科技的世紀。整行排鑄機(linotype)十九世紀末在歐美開始風行後,周刊、旬刊、半月刊等日益蓬勃,因此大量需求短篇小說,令短篇這個文類在二十世紀二戰前成為迅速茁壯的西方類型。大西洋兩岸不少作家都能以此維繫生計。在世紀末,這個傳統以風流雲散,只剩下《紐約客》尚在堅持。但一九五O年代後印刷技術的突飛猛進,廉價平裝本因此日益普羅,也為作家帶來額外、甚至鉅額的收入。較能以故事情節引人入勝的長篇小說在書市力量的推動下捲土重來,再度成為壟斷的類型。但九O年代網際網路的出現不單使市場的弱勢文類(如詩、譯詩)能夠另謀生存空間,也令少數語種的文學(如愛沙尼亞)能以英語網站,在邊緣向主流發聲。
二十世紀是女性的世紀。隨著教育的全面普及,女作家隊伍的成長最為可觀。維吉尼亞.吳爾芙一九二九年發表影響深遠、堪稱女性主義宣言之《自己的房間》時,大西洋兩岸的女作家寥寥可數。一九二六年義大利女作家葛拉齊雅.黛萊達雖以卓越的小說成就獲頒諾貝爾文學獎,但她在英語文壇的備受矚目,則來自D.H.勞倫斯的大力推介。一九五O年朵麗絲,萊辛寫非洲經驗的《青草高歌》在英國出版時,艾莉絲,莫桃珂還只是蓄勢待發。但才不過是十年的工夫,大西洋兩岸風雲急變,女作家開始撐起半邊天。及至世紀之交,女作家不在囿於"自己的房間",在各類型的小說,從科幻到偵探,均可看到她們的身影。
二十世紀是後殖民的世紀。二戰前第三世界春雷乍響的民族主義,在二戰後老式殖民主義,帝國主義已無法抵擋。亞洲、非洲、拉丁美洲的新興民族國家在不斷抗爭中陸續冒現。而文學及文學語言更成為這些國家確立主體性的重要手段。如何再原宗主國的語言、文化、文學傳統中發出自己的聲音,成為不少坐家的最大挑戰,也帶來連場論爭。吊詭的是,在世紀末,原宗主國的文壇(英、西、葡、法)紛紛吸納、收編這些生力軍來茁壯自己。例如今天馳騁英國文壇的就有來自印度、巴基斯坦、斯里蘭卡、香港;千里達、牙買加、奈及利亞等地的作家。而拉丁美洲西、葡語文學的異軍突起,不單將這兩語種推入當代世紀文壇,更為原宗主國的文學帶來旺盛生機。

The reminder

    Wating from the December to January, and it's became the gift after the Chinese new year. Though i 'd listened up all the record from the zip. sharing online, the US package is still awesome enough . almost records are the remix versions of the previous album,Let it Die. Some electrical factor are added that enrich the style and tune.

"The Reminder is equally diverse yet more full-blooded. From the indie pop of "I Feel It All" to the creeping electro-ballad "Honey Honey", the album ambles effortlessly; its musical palette is wide enough to stave off repetition yet innate enough to offer an intense cohesiveness. "

""With sadness so real that it populates the city and leaves you homeless again," coos Feist on "The Park", a desolate, lovelorn lament. The song-- with its references to a relationship torn by distance, omnipotent nature (a carefree bird can be heard mocking Feist's sadness in the background), and a hazy "past" that offers partly-forgotten flickers and flashes-- is a fitting summary of The Reminder's wounded pleas. Leery of a sixth sense, the songstress concludes "Intuition" with a question, "Did I miss out on you?"-- its insolubility packing more ache than a hundred clear-cut break-up songs. Such eternally spotty "what if?" queries needn't always strike such dour chords. On the shaggy, Broken Social Scene-esque romp "Past to Present", the refrain ("There's so much past inside my present") has the singer embracing yesteryear with a proud vitality. But no matter where she sits on love's teeter-totter-- down on the after-the-fact apology of "I'm Sorry" or aloft in heady infatuation on "Brandy Alexander"-- her philosophy-of-self is sound."

    最後一項帶給他莫大的滿足。通常他過日子的方式有如無脊椎生物,沒有固定形狀、沒有骨架,而現在總算進化到中生代的結構體,穩定而甚至是快活地朝高潮前進,正如戲就應該這麼發展,日子就該這麼過。他極端恐懼當一天生活的骨架到了崩潰的時刻,當他終於和女孩見過面、聊過天、在笑聲中行禮將她送出門外之後,他最怕的就是轉過身來,獨自面對收拾茶杯的殘渣和吃剩走味的三明治時的空虛。

    若要為他的生活方式找到一個正當理由,無疑要首推"生命的無意義"。安東尼就像蒙古的可汗,他所擁有的物件和他之間的關係,有如助手對大臣、隨從對地主、僕人對管家一般。那些書櫃裡數以千計仍不斷增加的書籍、他的公寓,還有寄望他祖父嚥下最後一口氣前的道德良知和而可能繼承的遺產,還有那些到處充斥具有威脅性的社交佳麗,雖然每個都像嘉洛汀一樣的愚蠢,但安東尼很感謝他們生在這個世界----或許安東尼該做的,是盡量仿效莫瑞優雅的沉著,定下心來鑽研無數代先賢先知累積的智慧。

    在這些反覆出現的想法中,其中的某一些用理性的邏輯來看是可以不屑一顧的,可以勇敢的將之踩在腳下的,然而她的頭腦卻一直加以反負分析,以致於變成一種疲勞轟炸的心結,這個心結讓安東尼冒著十月深冬的綿綿細雪前往圖書館,但是在他借出的書裡,沒有一本是他真正想要的。在此,我們只能用安東尼理解自己的方式來分析他;若要再多,變成了假設。他發現恐懼和寂寞逐漸在她身上滋長,只要想到自己一個人吃飯就令他驚恐萬分;然而,安東尼卻常常跟他厭惡的人共進晚餐。至於他曾一度著迷的旅行,最終也似乎變得難以忍受,就像一件多采多姿的事就缺乏主題,就像一個幽靈追逐著自己夢的影子。

    在青春不再那麼確定之後,接下來會是一段充滿劇烈和難耐的複雜時期。這段時間短暫如汽水的碳酸氫納般易於揮發,以致於容易完全被忽略。在比較先知先覺得人身上,它會持續較久,因為他們會企圖與其維持一種最極致細膩的關係,保存"不切實際"裡想的完整性。然而,過了二十五歲之後,事情便沒有那麼單純,那些迄今迫切而令人迷惑的問題,將逐漸變的遙遠而黯淡。規律的平凡生活隨之而來,猶如黃昏籠罩在粗礫的地景,將其線條軟化直到可以為人所容忍。它的複雜性太過幽微,太千變萬化;價值觀徹底被顛覆,喪失原有的生命力;很顯然的事,人們無法再由過去的經驗汲取足以面對未來的教訓----因此我們不再是那個聚有衝勁而樂於求知的人,保留許多精力投注在研究道德的真理,而以既定的行為規範取代觀念上的健全,把安全看得比浪漫還重要,在相當不自覺得情況下
我們趨向於務實。只剩下少數人能夠繼續得察覺這關係的細微差別---然而即使是這些人,一天中也僅存特定幾小時的時間投注於此。
